SUMMARY

Perform responsible, skilled, and unskilled work caring for and cleaning school buildings, facilities, and grounds.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TYPICAL TASKS

The minimum performance and expectations include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Appropriately maintains a clean and sanitary facility.
  • Sweeps, mops, waxes, vacuums, dust, sanitizes assigned area(s).
  • Daily, scrubs and disinfects toilets, urinals, toilet doors, sinks, fountains, and other fixtures using approved cleaning supplies.
  • Cleans windows on both the inside and outside at least once yearly or more often as needed.
  • Empties trash and garbage and replaces liners.
  • Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Notifies supervisor concerning the need for major and minor repairs or attention needed to lighting, heating, ventilation, roof leakage, windows, parking lot, painting, etc.
  • Cleans snow and debris from sidewalks.
  • Maintains the landscaping by mowing lawns weekly during the spring and summer as scheduled by the supervisor.  Plants and trim shrubbery and flowers as scheduled by the supervisor.
  • Follows the schedule set out by the supervisor.
  • Secures the building, checks and locks doors, turns off lights, etc., according to the schedule set out by the supervisor.
  • Works cooperatively with the supervisor, colleagues, and staff.  Treats all students fairly and equitably.
  • Wear safety glasses, a back brace, etc. when the assignment requires it.
  • Complies with all school and school division policies, state and federal regulations and laws.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

 

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Demonstrated ability and professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, school personnel, and members of the community; ability to read and comprehend in English written materials such as instructions, correspondence, memos, and e-mails; ability to write a response to memos, instructions, etc. and to effectively communicate information; ability to utilize basic math skills;  ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, administrators and members of the school community.  Candidate must be able to manage multiple tasks concurrently.

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED and some experience in custodial-type work.

Current driver’s license in the state of Virginia.  Clean driving record.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form; ability to use logical thinking to define problems and to use common sense in dealing with problems in standard situations.  Must possess good moral character.  Requires the ability to deal with people as a team player and the ability to be adaptable and flexible in dealing with supervisor, colleagues, parents and students.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS

Frequent walking and standing, stooping, climbing, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pulling, pushing, and lifting of equipment and/or materials weighing up to approximately 50 pounds may be required.  Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment necessary to perform the duties.   Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards. Regular contact with staff members, school administrators, students and members of the community is required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 

EVALUATION

The building principal or custodian supervisor will evaluate performance based on the ability and effectiveness of carrying out the above responsibilities.
